This can cause problems in circuits because electronic devices tend not to like the ground reference changing and moving as current draw changes. This chip is even smarter - it can handle high-side current measurements up to +60VDC The precision amplifier measures the voltage across a 0.1 ohm, 1% sense resistor. This resistor is rated for 2W continuous current, so you can measure up to +5A continuous current.
